It took him most of the morning to reach the citadel. The city was a maze of streets, leading him in the wrong direction. He was hot, sweaty, and weary by the time he found the Minstrel’s Rest. The large tavern dominated the street and backed into the yellow citadel walls.

A loud roar, so close Kerris imagined it blew his hair awry, rattled the buildings, and he struggled to control his terrified mule as a huge man shot out of the tavern and shook his fist in the air. “Xylvin! Will you belt up?” He disappeared again.

Xylvin? Were they anything to do with Ryvalin? Kerris darted down the road, tugging his mule after him. He tied it to the railing in the courtyard and hesitated on the threshold of the Minstrel’s Rest. The interior was dim and much cooler out of the glare of the bright sun.

“Yes? What do you want?” The large man who had shouted at Xylvin, whoever that was, loomed out of the shadows and Kerris took an involuntary step backwards. This man was built like an oak tree, with a broad chest and massive limbs.

“Are you the t-tavern keeper?”

The man stepped into the light and Kerris gulped. The man had a patch over one eye and a jagged scar down his face. “Yeah, and who might you be?”

“M-Mav sent me.”

The man burst into laughter. “Am I supposed to know who that is?”

“He sent me with a message for Ryvalin. O-only I don’t where to find Ryvalin.”

The man peered closer. “You expect me to believe you know Ryvalin?”

“N-no. Mav said to go to him if we needed help.”

“Her.”

“Her?”

“Ryvalin is a woman. The dragonair up at the citadel. Just follow the roars and you’ll find her.” The man laughed and walked back into the interior.

“D-dragon?”

The man laughed louder and Kerris stumbled out of the tavern. He stared up at the golden walls and swallowed as his gut fluttered. Gritting his teeth, he untied his mule and walked back down the street. At the end, he turned left and followed the curving road up the hill towards the citadel. The road widened, the surface smooth with flagged stones, the houses grew bigger, and the last butted up against the rising walls.

The road continued through tall iron gates and became a large open courtyard with a fountain in the centre before continuing onwards. Water misted in the air and coated the dragon’s scales in a gleaming multicoloured sheen, and Kerris froze. A dragon?

A low rumble vibrated down its throat as its huge head lay on the decorative cobbled stones surrounding the fountain, face pointed towards the gate. The rest of its massive body was curled around the fountain and its tail thumped the ground, the finger-like fronds tapping one at a time in a ripple effect.

Two guards, dressed in full armour and white tabards, blocked the gate, their pikes angled towards each other. They stood at stiff attention, staring straight ahead, until the dragon hissed and wisps of smoke drifted across the flagged stones, wrapped around their ankles and they twitched.
